GROWING UP
(This was written for my daughter on her 16th birthday)
Midi is "Jessie, Flower of Dunbane" sequenced by Barry Taylor

The hours passed, the music blared,
She was locked up in her room;
A big thump here, a burst of song there,
What on earth was going on?

Then quickly down the stairs she ran,
This lithe, happy, beautiful girl,
With a radiant smile and hair a-flying
And her skirt all in a swirl.

Oh, today she put her childhood away
And added to my tears.
Tears of joy and sadness were shed
For an unknown future and lost years.

She put away her dolls and toys -
Said they were only gathering dust;
A no-frills room full of posters,
Now, she said was a must!

Oh, today she put her childhood away
And added to my years.
Why, it seems like only yesterday
Like her, I was influenced by my peers.

Then for the first time I saw her -
This child/woman of mine
And realized that to love is to let go -
Let her live in her own time.

Oh, today she put her childhood away
And added to my fears.
Will the cold world truly love her,
Remain unpoluted and free from wars?
