Ice floes drifted out to sea,
Swooping gulls screamed raucously;
Faint words floated out to me:
"Goodbye, my friend, goodbye."

Sea foam gathered 'round his waist,
Pleading could not halt his haste;
Pivoting, he sought God's grace,
"Come back, dear friend, come back."

Shoulders bobbing in the swell,
Listening to the bell buoy's knell,
Disappeared as the waves fell,
"You've drowned, my friend, you've drowned."

All around me heard my scream,
Saying it was just a dream -
A nightmare (so it would seem),
"Thank you God for your mercy."

(mercy it wasn't, as this dream about a friend drowning came true)
