2/3 c. soft margarine or butter
1 3/4 c. white sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 (1 oz. squares) unsweetened chocolate (melted and cooled)
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 1/4 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/4 c. ice water (it's important that the water is ice cold)

1. Cream together butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla until light and fluffy.
2. Beat 5 minutes with mixer at high speed.
3. Blend in chocolate.
4. Add flour, soda and salt to creamed mixture alternately with ice water and beat after each addition.
5. Bake in two paper-lined tins at 350 for 30 - 35 minutes.
6. Ice with your favorite butter icing if you wish.

This cake would go well with bird's nest soup!
